Colors of Karnataka: Painting the South Indian Landscape
28 March 2026
As a painter based in Bangalore, Karnataka is my primary muse. This state offers an extraordinary range of landscapes within a few hours' drive.
The Palette of the Deccan Plateau
The red laterite soil that defines much of Karnataka creates a distinctive warm undertone to every landscape. Paired with the deep green of coconut palms and the brilliant blue of monsoon skies, it's a palette that no other region in India can match.
Bangalore: The Garden City
Despite rapid urbanization, Bangalore retains pockets of extraordinary natural beauty. Cubbon Park and Lalbagh offer century-old trees that create cathedral-like canopies. Nandi Hills, just an hour away, provides stunning dawn vistas.
The Coffee Country
Coorg and Chikmagalur — Karnataka's coffee-growing regions — offer misty, layered landscapes that are a watercolorist's dream. The rolling hills covered in coffee bushes, punctuated by silver oaks and wild pepper vines, create compositions of extraordinary subtlety.
Hampi: A Painter's Paradise
The boulder-strewn landscape of Hampi is unlike anything else on earth. Giant granite rocks balance improbably on one another, creating natural sculptures that catch the light differently at every hour. The warm pink-orange of the stone against deep blue skies is endlessly paintable.
The Coast
Karnataka's coastline, from Mangalore to Karwar, offers dramatic cliff faces, pristine beaches, and fishing villages that seem untouched by time. The tropical light here is uniquely intense, creating bold shadows and vivid colors.
Every weekend, I try to get out of the studio and into the landscape. Karnataka never stops inspiring me.
