Commissioning Custom Art: What to Expect
28 March 2026
A commissioned painting is the ultimate personalized artwork — created specifically for you, your space, and your vision. Here's how the process works.
Step 1: The Conversation
Every commission begins with a conversation. I'll ask about your space (dimensions, lighting, existing decor), your preferences (colors, styles, subjects), and any specific ideas or references you have in mind.
Don't worry if you're not sure exactly what you want — that's what this conversation is for. Many of my best commissions have started with a client saying, "I'm not sure, but I know I want something that feels like..."
Step 2: The Proposal
Based on our conversation, I'll put together a proposal that includes: - Recommended size and orientation - Suggested medium and style - Color palette direction - Timeline (typically 4-8 weeks) - Price quote
Step 3: Sketches and Approval
Before starting the final painting, I'll share preliminary sketches or digital mockups showing the composition. This is your chance to provide feedback and request adjustments before any paint hits canvas.
Step 4: The Painting Process
Once the sketch is approved, I begin the painting. I'll share progress photos at key stages so you can see the work evolving. Minor adjustments are still possible during this phase.
Step 5: Delivery
The finished painting is professionally varnished, photographed, and carefully packaged for delivery. I provide a certificate of authenticity and care instructions with every commission.
